The plushly coated Pomeranian is among the privileged breed of dogs that enjoys airtime and popularity on TV and movies. According to the American Kennel Club, for over 10 years now, the Pomeranian has enjoyed a repeatedly top 15 spot of the most popular breeds in America. And although this breed is taken in mostly as a companion and accessory dog, it nonetheless champions competitive dog sports such as agility competitions.

The Pomeranian is said to have originated from Egypt as evidence of paintings, sculpture and pottery depict the existence of a Pomeranian-like dog at the time. Eventually, this ancient breed was transported to Pomerania, a region in Europe that then included Germany and Poland. It is in this region that the Pomeranian, although at the time still weighed 20 pounds, was developed to have a better coat and to be more suitable creature for city dwelling.

Currently, the Pomeranian weighs 3 to 7 pounds and this is through the efforts of the English people who turned this breed in to a smaller and more colorful creature. As the Pomeranian became a certified lap dog, its popularity soared throughout Europe especially among the royals like Queen Charlotte and grandchild Victoria. Other personalities to have owned a Pomeranian were Emile Zola, Mozart and Marie Antoinette.

Today, the Pomeranian is grouped in to the toy dog category and belongs to the spitz type of breed. In many counties all throughout Europe, this dog is known as the Zwergspitz, a German word for dwarf spitz. Additionally, the Pomeranian name came from the Slavic root word Pomorze or Pomern meaning “along the sea”.

As breeders describe it, the Pom Pom possesses a fox-like, baby-doll or pansy looking face. This may be attributed to its innately luminous, almond-shaped and intelligent eyes. The coat of this breed is beautifully luscious, long and soft and is often colored in white, black, brown, orange, sable, wolf, or white with colored markings.

The original Pomeranian used to weigh 20 to 30 pounds but through the Mendelean breeding technique, breeders were able to decrease its size to 3 to 7 pounds. This breed may also live up to 12 or 19 years given that it is kept healthy. To achieve its prime health, it is important to give this little dog a dose of daily walks in order to keep it fit and sane.

The Pomeranian is a natural entertainer, sociable, energetic and loyal type of dog. It excels in competitive obedience and tricks performance even in circus acts. Caring for this beautifully long and double coated breed needs frequent brushing, regular dental checkups and daily ear and nose cleaning. More importantly, this dog is suitable for apartment living and although active indoors, does not solely rely on a wide spaced area to be healthy and busy.
